3D Is Coming To VOD

What do Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers and a Horror film have in common? Are they going to star as unwitting prey in a horror film? No, but I’ll reserve judgment on whether they should or not for now. Their films are breaking ground for 3D video-on-demand (VOD) to the home via Comcast.
  • Last August, Comcast tested the 3D format with Hannah Montana: The Best of Both Worlds.
  • Lionsgate’s My Bloody Valentine was offered to subscribers in July
  • Disney returns with Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience [date tbd].
We’re always looking at innovative technologies we can explore and what will make a good consumer offering, Comcast spokeswoman Alana Davis said. http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6665815.html
ODW feels one of the keys to 3D success on VOD will be the proper distribution of 3D glasses. Fans had to write to Lionsgate for glasses. Last year Disney provided tips on how to make your own 3D glasses. This year for the Jonas Brothers’ film, subscribers of the HD version will need to pick up their 3D glasses at a Comcast payment centers and mall kiosks. Hurry up kids, there are only a million pairs.
As this appears to be a new trend, will your tween let you borrow her Jonas Brothers’ 3D glasses when more horror films arrive in 3d next Halloween?
