BLACK SWAN (20th Century Fox)
Nina (Natalie Portman) wins the role of the Swan in her NYC ballet company’s production of “Swan Lake,” but this amazing opportunity takes a psychological toll when she is encouraged to get in touch with her dark side in order to dance the part of the Black Swan as convincingly as she portrays the White Swan.
Directed by Darren Aronofsky, this dark thriller shows what happens when people crack under the strain of achieving perfection. Natalie Portman won the Oscar® for Best Actress for her riveting performance. Fantastic minor turns by Barbara Hershey as Nina’s ex-ballerina mother, and Winona Ryder as an aging prima ballerina.

Naomi Watts, Sean Penn / Fair Game (Summit)
Modern marriage can be a tightrope when a working couple with young children tries to balance their lives. When that couple consists of a covert CIA agent (Naomi Watts) and a former diplomat (Sean Penn) whose lives are publicly revealed by a White House leak, the rope nearly snaps.
Based on the separate memoirs of Valerie Plame and her husband, Joe Wilson, this Doug Liman-directed film underperformed at the box office but should not be missed. It’s a revealing insider’s look at the Bush administration’s attempt to discredit Plame when her husband publicly revealed the lack of evidence to support claims of Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction.
