Buddy comedy fans will rejoice in this Kevin Smith-directed film starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan – from a script he didn’t write – as long as they aren’t looking for his signature edge. Longtime detective partners Jimmy Monroe (Willis) and Paul Hodges (Morgan) are suspended without pay after bungling a major arrest, but use their time off to search for Jimmy’s stolen baseball card which he plans to sell in order to pay for his daughter’s wedding. Pratfalls and pranks ensue, including a comedic turn by Sean William Scott as the local criminal who originally stole the baseball card.
Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan. R / 107 minutes / Available 7/20
Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes, Lili Taylor, Ellen Barkin. With a cast like that, not much more needs to be said about this seriously overlooked-by-audiences police drama about three cops who are in so deep they don’t know where their work ends and their lives begin. Eddie (Gere) is a suicidal cop about to retire; Tango (Cheadle) is a confused undercover agent desperately protecting his kingpin (Snipes); and Sal (Hawke) is a narcotics agent sorely tempted by drug money with which he could protect his young family.
Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke. R / 132 minutes / Available 7/20
Fast paced and funny, but for some falling short of a terrific action flick, “The Losers” stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Salanda, and Jason Patrick. A special ops team, assigned to attack and destroy a drug cartel in Bolivia, attempts to save children being used as drug mules. This diversion from their mission results in their safety when the helicopter that leaves without them is purposefully blown up. Now, the team vows to return to the USA and hunt down Max, the mysterious criminal who was behind their attempted assassination.
Zoe Saldana, Jason Patrick. PG-13 / 97 minutes / Available 7/20
If you want to see two of Twilight’s biggest stars stretch their acting chops, check out Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in this biopic about Joan Jett’s first band, The Runaways. With punk rock on the rise in the 70s, the advent of an all-girl band was a novelty that producer Kim Fowley was anxious to embrace. Follow Joan Jett (Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Fanning) as they come together to form an amazing band before their rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle tears them apart.
Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning. R / 106 minutes / Available 7/20
