As much as I hate admitting this, the Brits do mysteries right. Maybe it started with Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie but man can they tumble a dirty noire thriller around and make it sound like a high art painting come to life. We've already discussed my affection for "Law & Order: UK" (does it come in an IV form?) so BBC America's “Luther” does not disappoint.

Idris Elba came on the US scene years ago with HBO's hit "The Wire", the smart David Simon show about cops wire tapping a gang of drug dealers. As Stringer Bell, Elba turned a backdrop character into a cunning mastermind worthy of Shakespeare. Elba (ladies, you might want to have some water nearby for this one) like the Columbos and McMillans before him, gets the crime in the beginning of the show, knows his suspect and then figures out how to catch him.
