NICE GIRLS CREW

That boy with the glasses and his bird did some really good things.

By Kate Asche Wilson

I love books. I love the feel of books. I love the smell. I love holding a book in my hand and feeling the heavy importance of symbolic prose. I once hit a guy with Anna Karenina. Tolstoy prepared me for life, and I thank him. The day my local Borders was shut down and replaced with a Chipotle was the day my soul died. Needless to say I am thrilled that I discovered a series that combines my two most favorite things: meaningful literature and crass comedy.

Created by Christine Kwon and directed by Tanuj Chopra, NICE GIRLS CREW centers around Sophie (Lynn Chen), Leena (Sheetal Sheth), Geraldine (Michelle Krusiec), and the most amazing book club in the history of existence. Why is it so amazing? Because they never actually talk about the book. No, instead they take shots, pop pills, and create a castle of cookies. It’s glorious.

At ten minutes each NICE GIRLS CREW is broken up into
five episodes of pure awesome.

Since they’ve known each other since second grade these girls are the perfect frenamies, and would definitely kill each other if they weren’t best friends. Watching them interact is a constant train wreck and the best thing about this series.

Sophie is the neurotic over achiever that highlights important passages and has post it notes sticking out of every page. She was the girl in your AP English class that constantly raised her hand and loved The Scarlet Letter. Lynn Chen perfectly portrays Sophie by walking the thin line between upbeat positivity and possible serial killer.

Leena is the typical slacker that arrives late and never reads the book. However, I’m pretty sure I like her version of The Count of Monte Cristo much better. Sure revenge is cool and all, but vampires are much more topical. Get with the times Dumas. Sheetal Sheth is great as Leena with her nonchalant attitude and perfect eye rolls. Her expressions constantly give away the fact that she thinks her two best friends are absolutely insane.

Geraldine is perfection. She’s a high-strung mess of fantastic, and I credit Michelle Krusiec for that. When she performed her beatnik interpretation of Howl I died. Mainly because she sounded exactly like Christopher Walken. Did you go to a Christopher Walken impersonation camp Michelle? The resemblance is uncanny.

NICE GIRLS CREW is so fun to watch. I love being entertained, and there wasn’t a moment when I wasn’t laughing. Each character is so unique and crazy in their own way, and I’m thrilled to see where this series goes. Make no mistake about it...

...Oprah wishes she was apart of this book club.
