PILLARS OF THE EARTH - On Demand

Starz

On Demand Weekly provides reviews of TV series hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: “Pillars of the Earth” on Starz On Demand.

King Henry has no male heir for the kingdom, and the Church doesn’t find a woman leader acceptable. Cue the treachery and unrest of monarchical succession! Is it the Tudors? No, it’s the pre-Tudors, “Pillars of the Earth”. Just say Ian McShane (“Deadwood”) and Rufus Sewell (“Dangerous Beauty”) and I’m there already. “Pillars of the Earth” has them, along with Donald Sutherland, Matthew McFadyen (“Little Dorrit”) and Allison Pill in this British throne-ology.

Pillars

There’s lots of murder, incest, treachery, births, fights for succession, deaths, and lots of blood spattering (although, no sex until the second episode). Despite all the mud and blood, the lead characters look awfully well-groomed (who knew there was so much shampoo and conditioner in the middle ages?) but if you love period melodrama, “Pillars of the Earth” is your cup of mead.

Ian McShane is appropriately broody and menacing as the Machiavellian Bishop. Allison Pill and Hayley Atwell are nicely feisty, and Rufus Sewell and Tony Award-winning Eddie Redmayne are soulful, brave and very, very handsome. Who needs dragons? Ok, a little humor might be nice to break up the action, and perhaps a little complexity would add some depth, but there’s time for that to develop.

Pillars

I know I’ll be keeping an eye on this for a while…
