WINTER’S BONE
Demand it! Based on Daniel Woodrell’s novel of the same name, this Grand Jury Prize winner at the Sundance Film Festival stars Jennifer Lawrence as the sibling caretaker of her rural, impoverished Ozark family. Forced to search for her crystal meth-dealer father when he doesn’t show up for his court date or else lose her home, Ree Dolly (Lawrence) visits a cornucopia of local criminals, some of whom are family members, in this haunting drama about a true heroine. This highly praised film shows a gritty slice of American life that few people will forget.

Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes. R / 100 minutes / Available 10/26

SEX AND THE CITY 2

Skip It. Fans of the series will no doubt want to see Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall reunited in this second big screen version of the HBO show, this time taking the ladies to Abu Dhabi. Menopause, a lackluster marriage, terrible toddlers and problems at work affect the characters lives in the film, which starts out with a flashback about how the women met and graduates into an exotic vacation the four best friends take together. There are terrific cameos and appearances by other members of the series’ cast, but the bloated film just doesn’t come together.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristen Davis. R / 146 minutes / Available 10/26

THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE
Demand it. Mikael Blomquist (Michael Nyqvist), publisher of Milennium magazine, investigates the death of his mag’s journalist who had been researching an eastern European sex trafficking ring that potentially has ties to the Swedish government. Upon the death of the journalist, the police’s prime suspect becomes Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace), who tries to figure out who’s behind the frame job before the police track her down. In Swedish with subtitles, this critically acclaimed film is a must see for fans of Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium Trilogy.”

Michael Nyquist, Noomi Rapace. R / 99 minutes / Available 10/26

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON
Demand it. Already available on DVD, this Dreamworks animated feature is a fable about cultural misunderstanding in the form of a young Viking boy named Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and the dragon he intends to slay but instead befriends. Other characters are voiced by Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, and Jonah Hill.

Gerard Butler, Jonah Hill. PG / 98 minutes / Available 10/29
