NOBODY WALKS

Olivia Thirlby and John Krasinski / NOBODY WALKS (Magnolia)

Each of the NOBODY WALKS’s 82 minutes offers something meaningful and the script, co-written by Lena Dunham ("Girls") and the film’s director Ry Russo-Young, is both simple and complex. Go Watch It

THE AMBASSADOR

Mads Brügger / THE AMBASSADOR (Drafthouse)

Mads Brügger’s film, THE AMBASSADOR (Drafthouse), reveals the dishonesty and double-dealing that goes into the distribution of phony positions of power in nations we consider “failed states.” Go Watch It

THE ISLAND PRESIDENT (GoldwynFilms)) gives us extraordinary access to a man, Mohamed Nasheed who first fought to bring democracy to his country, the Republic of Maldives. Go Watch It

BACHELORETTE

THE BACHELORETTE (Radius TWC)

BACHELORETTE is everything I want it to be. It’s a hilarious combination of MEAN GIRLS and BRIDESMAIDS, but has a secret understanding of the female psyche that takes you by surprise and solidifies the fact that this film is in a class of it’s own. Go Watch It

THE GREEN WAVE

GREEN WAVE (Red Flag)

THE GREEN WAVE unfolds as a chronological collage, documenting the youthful excitement preceding a corrupt election that was later mired by brutal suppression of anti-government activity. Go Watch It

SLEEPWALK WITH ME

SLEEPWALK WITH ME (IFC Films)

It’s a terrific cast and they make the most of it. Along with Lauren Ambrose, Carol Kane and James Rebhorn – all of whom I would love to see more often in anything – you’ll recognize many a supporting cast member of HBO’s GIRLS, including Birbiglia himself, Alex Karpovsky (also seen in Lena Dunham’s TINY FURNITURE) and Kristen Schaal (also very, very funny in HBO’s FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS) plus some other up and coming comics like Marc Maron. Go Watch It

STELLA DAYS
Martin Sheen / STELLA Days (Tribeca Film)

Featuring a warm, introspective performance from the treasure that is Martin Sheen, the film is a sweet valentine to the power of belief. Go Watch It

PEACE, LOVE AND MISUNDERSTANDING (IFC Films)

It’s a joy to see Jane Fonda in a part that fits her like an old tie-dye and her work with Catherine Keener shows two fine actresses at their best. Go Watch It

MARGARET

DEMAND IT. Granted, that’s usually reserved for the last comment, but having waited 11 years for Kenneth Lonergran’s follow up to his indelible first feature film, YOU CAN COUNT ON ME (a wait mostly due to the heated, protracted, fiercely litigious editing process of MARGARET), who wouldn’t wish to see the net-net of all the controversy? Go Watch It

KLOWN

KLOWN (Drafthouse)

Explicit and daring, it’s equal parts mischief and menace. It makes no apologies for combining down-and-dirty imagery with a warm and fuzzy story of redemption. If you like your comedy risky and raw, have some laughs. Go Watch It

TRISHNA

Freida Pinto / TRISHNA (Sundance Selects)

It’s not long into TRISHNA that you recognize a familiar story. Michael Winterbottom’s rift on Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles is just that: a rift on a well-known, classic tale of doomed love. It doesn’t exactly follow Hardy’s acclaimed novel or any of its screen adaptations specifically, but it is what it is. Go Watch It

JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI

JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI (Magnolia Pictures) is a film best enjoyed by foodies who eat their nigiri by hand, fish-down in the shōyu. Go Watch It

A warm and gentle comedy that’s both mature and fairly family friendly. THE RUNWAY is a can’t-miss pleasure. Go Watch It

360
Rachel Weisz / 360 (Magnolia)

Roving through Vienna, London, Denver, Phoenix, Paris and back again, 360 is director Fernando Meirelles’ (CITY OF GOD, THE CONSTANT GARDENER) latest film which interweaves story lines about individuals all facing a metaphoric fork in the road. Go Watch It

Chris Rock / 2 DAYS IN NEW YORK (Magnolia)

If you are a fan of Woody Allen films, in which small but relatable moments become absurd, frenzied and laugh-out-loud funny: check out Julie Delpy’s 2 DAYS IN NEW YORK. Go Watch It

CHELY WRIGHT: WISH ME AWAY

CHELY WRIGHT: WISH ME AWAY (Gravitas)

We think we live in modern times, but this is the tragic story of a beautiful, talented woman who closeted herself for most of her life, finally deciding in 2007, it was time to be true to herself. Go Watch It

THE MAGIC OF BELLE ISLE

Morgan Freeman, Emma Fuhrmann / THE MAGIC OF BELLE ISLE (Magnolia Pictures)

It would be easy to pick at the film with today’s cynical POV, but Rob Reiner and Morgan Freeman prove you’re not too old or young to believe in the power of imagination. Go Watch It

BLACK BUTTERFLIES (Tribeca Film)

To call Ingrid Jonker, the “South African Sylvia Plath” just doesn’t make sense, except they were both women, extraordinary poets, emotionally charged and both died well before their time.  Go Watch It

GNARR (Focus World)

GNARR (Focus Features) is a one of the best political documentaries in a long time,an unpredictable melange of comedy and drama that shows how the inner workings of a political system where literally anybody can be mayor. Go Watch It
