Premiering On Demand This Week (May 17, 2011)

THE MECHANIC (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment)
As hit man Arthur Bishop, Jason Statham is in his comfort zone, and Ben Foster plays Bishop’s protégé. A remake of the Charles Bronson film, this version is slicker, but not better than the original.

Contracted to kill his mentor, Arthur Bishop performs the job only to later realize he was set up. Meanwhile, Bishop takes on his mentor’s vengeful son, Steve, as a trainee hit man, without Steve knowing that Bishop killed his father. Directed by Simon West.
Jason Statham, Ben Foster.
Rated R / 93 Minutes / Available 5/17

Same day as DVD.

THE RITE (Warner Bros.)
Anthony Hopkins is in (over-the-) top form, and Colin O’Donoghue gives a credible performance. Based on a true story, the film is entertaining if you know what to expect, which may be more realism and fewer thrills than you’d hope for.

Battling his sense of faith, seminary student Michael Kovak (O’Donoghue) is sent to work with Father Lucas Trevant (Hopkins), a priest whose main job is to exorcise demons for the church. Suffice it to say that Kovak gets more proof than he bargains for.
Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue.
Rated PG-13 / 114 Minutes / Available 5/17

Same day as DVD, before Netflix and Redbox.

THE ROOMMATE (Screen Gems)
A milquetoast, college version of SINGLE WHITE FEMALE with a nod to FATAL ATTRACTION, your only reason to see this is the attractive cast, unless you’re too young to have seen better versions of this type of thriller.

Entering college freshman Sara (Mika Kelly) becomes fast friends with her equally beautiful roommate, Rebecca (Leighton Meester). When Rebecca realizes their friendship isn’t exclusive to one another, her obsessive jealousy causes her to act out in unimaginable ways.
Leighton Meester, Mika Kelly.
Rated PG-13/ 91 Minutes/ Available 5/17

Same day as DVD, before Netflix.
