This Week: Where My Ladies At? Uncovering the Absence of Women on the Top 10

Lady Gaga. Katy Perry. Rihanna.Taylor Swift. These are undoubtable the superstar female singers of 2010. So why aren’t their music videos always popping on demand? Its no surprise that rap and urban videos do consistently well but can’t the gentlemen of the Top 10 step aside? Rap videos are always appearing on top week after week but that doesn’t mean they are only videos enjoying consistent play. Katy Perry has done well recently with “Teenage Dream” and Ciara has been a chart topper too! This week, check out some of the ladies’ on VOD.

On Music Choice On Demand, Ciara debuts her new video for “Speechless.” This is the second single from her latest album “Basic Instinct.” “Ride” feat. Ludacris was one of the hottest videos this summer so let’s see if her sophomore effort will outperform. Rihanna’s songs have been performing well on the charts but she faced a difficult touring season trying to promote the album “Rated R.” This fall, RiRi is back with her latest single and video for “Only Girl,” which currently sits at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Let’s see if these ladies can break into the Top 10 on Music Choice’s Most Demanded in the next few weeks!

How could I talk about the women of 2010 without mentioning Taylor Swift? This county cutie turned pop sensation manages to stick it to her exes while remaining classy with lyrics that tug at the heartstrings of anyone who can relate. Music Choice On Demand has a special super category available now featuring ten of her best videos – from “Tim McGraw” to “Mine.” Country music has never been my favorite but Swift has definitely grown on me and I can’t help but sing along to her infectious tunes. Find out if you belong to her this month!

Congratulations are in order for one of the original divas as Mariah Carey finally announced that she is pregnant this week! “Merry Christmas II You” does not hit the shelves/iTunes until next week but MTV On Demand has one of her latest videos with Nicki Minaj for “Up Out My Face.” The red and white theme reads like an upscale, yet slightly bou-ghetto Target commercial but who can resist the talent of these two together? Even if the result is a little off, it’s still awesome when two artists from different generations collaborate.

So what is up with the lack of ladies in the top spots? I can’t say for sure but despite a few female artists reaching prominence lately, this year has really seen a marked increase the infusion of rap into the pop charts. Music Choice directors are noticing the trend and have noted that as hip hop becomes mainstream, it should come as no surprise that videos which feature new dance trends, catchy lyrics, and danceable beats would obviously do well no matter the genre!

On a slightly different note, some of you may be wondering about the meaning or significance of the pictures with your favorite artists posed in front of a large wall. Music Choice headquarters in New York often hosts artists and they will sign their name in a hallway of fame. The hallway is covered with dozens of signatures and sketches – from the floor to the ceiling- serving as a true testament to the many artists who appreciate their popularity on Music Choice. Such a fun idea for a fun, music-loving environment!

And don’t forget to vote in your local midterm elections this Tuesday!

Check SoundWatch every week for the latest in Music On Demand and scintillating pop culture discussion!
