It’s Good For Us That It Sucks To Be Her
By Jean Tait

Despite the frazzled ending of last season, things seem to be fairly calm in the Gregson household as Charmaine recovers from her fiasco of a wedding, and they all try to deal with (read ignore) the revelation or Tara and Charmaine’s half-brother. Unfortunately, things never remain calm for long.

Within Tara, Buck decides to find this sibling, Alice tries to create a perfect baby shower, and T wants to go wild, while Tara just wants to go back to school finish her degree.

Tara’s return to school hits a serious snag when alter Shoshanna decides to teach the psychology class instead of taking it, seriously pissing off the professor, Dr. Hattaras. Dr. Hattaras (played by the deliciously sly and funny Eddie Izzard) is skeptical of DID and thinks Tara is using it to get attention which throws her enough off balance to allow the alters even more freedom to come out and take over her life.

This means even less sleep for Tara’s body and more stress, leading to more alter outbursts, and so on into a vicious spiral, culminating in Charmaine exiling Tara from her and Neil’s new baby.

I know it’s wrong to laugh at the mentally ill, but “US of Tara” is so much fun! You can’t help but feel sorry for Tara as she loses control over her “selves” but it is seriously delightful to watch Toni Collette play this multitude of characters with such conviction.

It’s as if you’re watching “Desperate Housewives” with only one actress portraying Bree, Lynette, Susan, Gabrielle AND Carlos! And when you throw John Corbett and Eddie Izzard in the mix, it is the TV-watching equivalent of eating a bag of kettle corn washed down with a pint of Rum Raisin Haagen Dazs.
