If you don’t already know Rich Sommer – who plays Harry Crane, the head of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce's television department on Mad Men – you will soon. Sommer stars in the movie Fairhaven, which opens January 11 in theaters and January 15 on VOD everywhere.

Set in a small fishing village on the Massachusetts coast, part comedy, part drama Fairhaven is the story of three childhood friends reunited for a father’s funeral. Fairhaven also stars Chris Messina, Tom O'Brien and Sarah Paulson.

Sommer’s character Sam is a divorced, single father. He and the other main characters in the movie all grew up together; while Dave (Chris Messina) made it out of their small Massachusetts town, Sam and Jon have stayed there and haven’t had chance or reason to leave yet.

“I think that Sam is complacent”, says Sommer. “He is bummed out about his divorce and stuck a little bit. He is doing what he can to be a good Dad but it’s not the most fun existence in the world. I think when Dave comes back for his Dad’s funeral it shakes all three of those guys up. “

Sommer met Messina in South Field, Michigan when they were filming ‘The Giant Mechanical Man’ (2012). “He wondered if I would take a look at the script. I did and I jumped at the chance to get to work with Chris again and so I headed to Fairhaven a few weeks later,” says Sommer.

Nick DeNinno [ND]: How was it working with Chris Messina?

Rich Sommer [RS]: I would tell anyone that he is one of my favorite people I have had the pleasure of working with. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

We all made about six dollars on this movie, combined, so we weren’t doing it because of the money. We were doing it because it was a script that we really liked and it was people that we really wanted to work with. I would pay to be in a movie with Chris again.

ND: I don’t want to give anything away but your character Sam is really central to this entire story and there is so much that goes unspoken around him. Can you tell me -- does Sam know what is going on?
RS: Oh, great question. I don’t think so. Maybe at some point he suspected. I mean he’s not stupid but I think he also wants to give the benefit of the doubt.

I don’t know that he knows anything as far as what I imagine you are asking me about but I think that he is not dumb, obviously, but he also knows that—no matter what, these are his friends and a lot of that was hopefully in the past.

ND: I think your character is the only one who is the closest to living in the present.

RS: Yes, but I don’t know if he really has a choice. He doesn’t really have time for aspiring beyond what he has and he kind of says that at one point, that’s all there is – this. He’s in a place and it hasn’t even occurred to him to want more than he has.

ND: How do you think the film is going to do on VOD?

RS: I love the movie and in all honesty it is my favorite thing that I have done in terms of the type of performance that Tom (writer/director Tom O'Brien) let me fool around with.

It is sort of the most personal feeling thing that I have ever done. I hope some people see it.

When do we get to see you next?

RS: We are shooting Mad Men right now. I don’t know when we are going to premiere yet. I would guess it is going to be somewhere in the first third of 2013.

ND: Thanks for your time. I really appreciate it.

RS: Absolutely. Good to talk to you.

In Theaters 1/11 and VOD 1/15 on iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, Google Play, Xbox, PSN, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, AT&T U-Verse, Verizon FiOS, Cablevision, Cox, Charter, and more.
