TREME ON DEMANDApril 12, 2010

TREME ON DEMAND

HBO

On Demand Weekly provides new movie and Television reviews of hot titles on demand. Today’s review: Treme.

The tag line “It’s not TV, it’s HBO” was intended to highlight the pay cabler’s elite status amid its TV channel rivals, and now some could say there exists an even more exclusive club, perhaps with a tag line that reads “It’s not HBO, it’s Simon HBO.” After slipping sideways from journalism at the Baltimore Sun, David Simon wrote for network hits NYPD Blue and Homicide, Life on the Street (based on his novel). Great career… And then came Emmy Award-winning The Corner, then oft-repeated “best TV show ever” (and Obama fave) The Wire and then mini-series stunner Generation Kill, all on HBO. It’s become easy to understand and appreciate the cult of David.

Now, with the bar higher than ever, Simon and co-creator (Wire & Homicide creative) Eric Overmyer, along with a coterie of other such alums (including Simon’s long-time friend and brilliant writer David Mills who collapsed during filming and tragically died of an aneurysm at 48) bring us Treme (pronounced Treh-MAY), an hour-long drama named after the so-called “poorest neighborhood in New Orleans” also the “birthplace of jazz” three months after Hurricane Katrina.

NO ONE DIES IN LILY DALE - On VOD

HBO

On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: HBO's NO ONE DIES IN LILY DALE.

I’ve always been fascinated by psychics and mediums. I can’t convince myself to believe in them one hundred percent, but I can’t dismiss them all as fakes, either. That is the appeal of NO ONE DIES IN LILY DALE for me. Lily Dale, New York, is a community of Spiritualists.

The Fence (La Barda) - On Demand

HBO

On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: “The Fence.”
Email Jean

In 2006, in the frenzied fear of Homeland Security, Drugs, and Illegal Immigration, Congress decided that what this country needed was a fence. A great big, expensive fence to protect us from the terrorists, drug dealers and illegal immigrants coming from Mexico. And so it was. Sort of. Rory Kennedy’s incisive documentary explains the foibles and follies of our protective boundary with Mexico. (Note that no one has suggested one with Canada).

Back in 1999, I saw Ms. Kennedy’s first documentary, “American Hollow,” and although heartfelt and sincere, it certainly lacked polish. Well, no longer. “The Fence” is not only entertaining and educational; it is also a highly polished and concise piece of documentary filmmaking. At a brisk 36 minutes, “The Fence” cleverly informs the viewer without undue polemicizing.

Monica and David - On Demand

HBO

On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: “Monica and David" (HBO).

Monica and David are two sweet, helpful, warm-hearted, charming people in love. Ok, so they are developmentally disabled. Both have Down’s Syndrome. They’re getting married. How does that work? Well, that is the subject of the HBO Documentary, “Monica and David.”

At first, the film makes it look almost easy. The families have the necessary resources to provide all of the necessary love, guidance, schooling, and therapy for their kids. Monica and David’s wedding is lovely, and David moves in with Monica’s loving family. But when the family moves to a new city and David is diagnosed with diabetes, their routines have to adjust, and they’ve got to start taking steps toward more independence.
