Focus World’s First Movie On Demand - SUBMARINOSeptember 28, 2011
Focus World
On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: SUBMARINO (Focus World).
SUBMARINO
Blessed is he who loves his brother….
By Cynthia Kane
Denmark’s Thomas Vinterberg (THE CELEBRATION (FESTEN), IT’S ALL ABOUT LOVE, DEAR WENDY) is one of the architects of the Dogme 95 film movement. In 1998, he was the hottest new filmmaker internationally; today he’s a much underappreciated talent, and his newest film, SUBMARINO proves this.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Jonas T. Bengtsson, this is a story about three brothers, one, little Martin, who has no chance. So much so that he dies within the first scenes of the film as a baby. Their alcoholic mother could care less. Fast forward twenty years and we meet two brothers who have never found forgiveness and have never forgiven themselves.

Many who have seen this film have criticized it for the realism it portrays. To me, however, it gives hope that Thomas Vinterberg has once again found his voice. Not since THE CELEBRATION, a film that was so unique, in-your-face, a film that made the audience so uncomfortable, but was brutally honest in its portrayal of a very dysfunctional family come together for the 60th birthday celebration of their father.
What THE CELEBRATION had brilliantly that sadly SUBMARINO lacks is the use of humor – dark and twisted perhaps – but while we’re roiling in shock, there is also relief for us in the madness and absurdity of this celebratory weekend.

Yet… where would VInterberg or any filmmaker include the humor in this story? I don’t know, and perhaps the choice to stay clear of it was correct.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES – Premieres November 15
While director of the first three PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movies Gore Verbinski has moved onto more interesting projects (RANGO, THE LONE RANGER), Disney has turned the reins over to Rob Marshall who has been stumbling since the acclaimed musical CHICAGO.
They brought back Johnny Depp to reprise his role of Captain Jack Sparrow / Keith Richards. Let's be honest, there is no franchise without Depp / Sparrow. There are many faces from the first 3 installments you will recognize along with newcomers Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane. I kind of imagine this was made for fans of the series who have tired watching the first three so frequently and need new flavors to continue their interest in these rambuctious swashbuckers.
Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz
PG-13, Action

LARRY CROWNE – Premieres November 15
Has it been 15 years since Tom Hanks feature film directorial debut (THAT THING YOU DO)? When doing press, Hanks spoke of working on this script with friend Nia Vardalos over 5 years. Now I know what she's been doing since MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING. It may be time to chalk MBFGW as a one hit wonder and put the romance writing pen down.
If a film is not a biopic, perhaps working on a screenplay for half a decade isn't advisable. Chances are it will not flow with the current issues. Even though the subplot of being laid off happens to dovetail during these woeful economic times. Let's see what device can we orchestrate for Hanks and Julia Roberts to meet and fall for each other? Community College where she teaches and he can win her over as an older, scooter-driving, student. Sweet intentions, but too implausible. Skip it unless you have a need for a Hanks / Roberts fix.
Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts
PG-13, Romantic Comedy

Tribeca Film Releases Four New Movies On Demand, Including NORTHEASTDecember 27, 2011
Tribeca Film
On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: NORTHEAST (Tribeca Film).
Hipster men: prepare for celibacy. The writer and director of NORTHEAST has pointed his camera at you. Your cover is blown. When you’re at a party talking about your film project, your photography or your found object art or not talking at all because being cute and mysterious gets you laid, you still know that you spend your days killing time and producing next to nothing. Hey don’t change, but since you partied your way through a certain Ivy in Ithaca (via the Ag School), graduating without any debt, but also without any education, what else could you do anyway? Whatever but don’t see this film with the chick you’re trying to shag or she might see who you really are: a loser.

It’s easy to watch this film expecting that it’s actually about its protagonist, Will. That’s what we expect when we watch a movie: the protagonist does stuff, we relate to some of the experiences he has and wish we could experience others. Sometimes its even fun to identify with bad guy or girl – we can even root for them. Unfortunately just about everyone is going to watch NORTHEAST this way and then wind up confused because the story is so, to be polite, sparse. This is not a movie about Will.
NORTHEAST is dating manual. It’s a red flag. It’s an older brother telling you that you should know better. If you’ve ever lived in Portland or Berkeley or Austin or Brooklyn and dated a cool guy who didn’t have a real job because he was trying to achieve his “vision,” this movie will mean much more to you that to the rest of us. You’ll remember how cute he was and how you romanticized the bravery it took for him to reject materialism and financial security. You’ll also remember that he stopped returning your calls and pretty much ignored you after you slept with him a few times. If you haven’t yet been charmed by a Will in real life, you’ll watch this movie and wonder why anyone would give the time of day to this boring zero on the road to nowhere. But now you’ll know how to identify him at the next party before you’re drawn into his bullshit.

Part I - Cynthia's is HERE.
Part II - Chris's is below.
10. SHUT UP, LITTLE MAN! AN AUDIO ADVENTURE
Matthew Bate’s hilarious and poignant film about unwanted fame and the subculture of pre-Internet tape trading was an entertaining and effective documentary.
9. THE MAN FROM NOWHERE
The violent and kinetic thrill ride from Korean director Jeong –beom Lee was stuffed with dynamic action set-pieces and an amazing performance from child actor Sae-ron Kim
8. BLACKTHORN
The last real man, Sam Shepard, took on the legend of the last real outlaw, Butch Cassidy, in an elegiac film about the final days of cowboys and Indians.
7. THE BIG UNEASY
Humorist Harry Shearer’s fascinating and heartbreaking document of the post-Katrina cover-up by the Army Corps of Engineers. Thoroughly sourced, sincerely conveyed, and absolutely fascinating.
6. BRIGHTON ROCK
Helen Mirren and John Hurt classed up this retelling of Graham Greene’s novel about a killer and the girl he entrances. Set against the birth of the mods/rockers conflict, Rowan Joffe’s film also boasted an intense performance by Sam Riley.
5. CONAN O’BRIEN CAN’T STOP
Behind the scenes with the talk show host on his post-Tonight concert tour, director Rodman Flender’s film was painful, funny, and painfully funny.
4. TUCKER AND DALE VS. EVIL
Horror clichés were turned on their ear in Eli Craig’s debut film. Stars Taylor Labine and Alan Tudyk were a joy as the harmless hillbillies mistaken for psychos.

STEVE JOBS: ONE LAST THING - Now On DemandJanuary 11, 2012
Gravitas
On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand and from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: STEVE JOBS: ONE LAST THING (Gravitas).
STEVE JOBS: ONE LAST THING
By Joe Charnitski
I visited the Apple Store near Central Park shortly after the untimely passing of Steve Jobs. I wanted to see the memorials and the crowds for myself. There were dozens, maybe hundreds of people either standing silently, as if at a sacred site, or slowly streaming by, rubber necking to see the many cards, bouquets and, of course, apples that had been strewn along the front of the store in memoriam.
I was a little surprised at the substantial outpouring of sadness from young and old set off by Jobs’ death. Not because I didn’t consider him a significant figure in our new century and the previous, or that I didn’t appreciate the contributions of his products, his vision and, not to be overlooked, his treasured “Think Different” campaign of the late-90s. I assumed the response would mirror the reaction to the death of any beloved celebrity. This, instead, felt like a national tragedy.
I was similarly surprised by the one-hour documentary STEVE JOBS: ONE LAST THING. It starts off as a fairly routine “before he was famous” story. We go back to Jobs’ home town, walk the streets he grew up on, meet the friends he knew then. Everyone talks about how Steve was something special. They all knew he would do great things one day. Nothing shocking here.
As the film goes on, though, I couldn’t help but find it compelling, because Jobs is so damn compelling. His resilience is so compelling. The film includes a few interviews Jobs had done over the years. In one of them, when he was much younger, he describes the important moment he realized that everything around him that we call “life” was created by people no smarter than him, or any of us he demands. Once you understand that, Jobs insists, you realize that you can do anything, and then you do.

- BUCKY LARSON: BORN TO BE A STAR
THE IDES OF MARCH – Premieres January 17
Might I interest you in a film written, directed and starring George Clooney? Okay, so Clooney isn't the lead (he is in that other movie getting Oscar buzz not on demand yet), but just look at the rest of the cast: Ryan Gosling, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood. The once up-and-comer Ryan Gosling, is now a leading man. He's in interesting films, if not box office bofo (DRIVE, BLUE VALENTINE) and who doesn't love a political thriller. Hoffman and Giamatti are perfectly cast as rival campaign managers. I'd watch a series based on their two characters and the sleeze they would bring to office every four years. Hello HBO, Showtime, AMC? Kudos to whoever brought them on board. Unfortunately they're never on the screen at the same time. But they use the other characters to carry out their needs on the campaign trail.
I'm not crazy about the actual plot IDES revolves around. It missed the opportunity to be an iconic political film with this stellar cast. Clooney includes some impressionable dialogue as potentially pragmatic politician, but his actions belie a more scandalous, manipulative persona. It leaves you less enamored with an idealogue you would want to believe in. A notion we're all too familair with in real life. An idea that refutes any hope for change.
The unfortunate storyline aside, IDES is well acted and worth a rental to just watch these superb actors.
Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood

Click Your Flick - Movies On Demand for the Week of January 20thJanuary 20, 2012
Movie On Demand
Movies On Demand has a new Facebook app called Click Your Flick. Each week the app pits 16 new movies on demand in a tournament style competition where you (the undecided movie viewer is looking for help on what to watch) select one movie from two releases. Over 15 rounds, it’s narrowed down to two and then the app provies a button for you to ask your friends to help you decide which movie to rent. Upon that, you then rent the movie on demand with your remote control.
In this era of social media sharing, we’re not sure how many friends will help you select a movie in a timely manner (and know the choices you’re looking for assistance on). But who thought we'd be so dependent on social networks?
So we thought we’d play along. Our writers weigh in on the list of 16 movies...
