Congratulations to SnagFilms, Disney & the Smithsonian Channel. And New York Times, how about showing some love to our coverage of the On Demand industry??? - ODW

On-Demand Options for Hard-to-Find Films

Serious moviegoers may still see on-demand channels as a dumping ground for films that were in theaters six months ago or weren’t good enough to be in theaters at all. But as more and more “small,” serious films fight for screen time, a few distributors are starting to see on-demand television as a first option — which means that the quality of on-demand offerings is beginning to rise... PILLARS OF THE EARTH - On Demand

Starz

On Demand Weekly provides reviews of TV series hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: “Pillars of the Earth” on Starz On Demand.

King Henry has no male heir for the kingdom, and the Church doesn’t find a woman leader acceptable. Cue the treachery and unrest of monarchical succession! Is it the Tudors? No, it’s the pre-Tudors, “Pillars of the Earth”. Just say Ian McShane (“Deadwood”) and Rufus Sewell (“Dangerous Beauty”) and I’m there already. “Pillars of the Earth” has them, along with Donald Sutherland, Matthew McFadyen (“Little Dorrit”) and Allison Pill in this British throne-ology.

AMERICAN COWSLIP Provides a Val Kilmer Fix On Demand

Gravitas Ventures

On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: AMERICAN COWSLIP.
Email Carol

AMERICAN COWSLIP is subtitled “A Redneck Comedy” but not in the Jeff Foxworthy sense. Sure, you’ll get the ubiquitous car parked on the front lawn, but this is not a formulaic we’re-poor-and-unsophisticated-but-still-happy kind of movie.

Instead, AMERICAN COWSLIP attempts to answer the question, What would happen if Eric Stoltz and the dude who played Waingro in HEAT had a baby and that baby grew up to be a heroin addict, doted on by three grannies and shamelessly pursued by a 17-year old hottie? And what would happen if we put our heroin hero between two speeding meteors on a collision course: being evicted from his home into an agoraphobic nightmare or winning the “Garden of the Year” contest, thus saving his house, sanity and baggie of horse? Yes, what would happen indeed.

AN AMERICAN SPORTS STORY…THE RIVALS - Smithsonian Channel

Smithsonian Channel

On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: AN AMERICAN SPORTS STORY...THE RIVALS.
Email John Werner

Watching AN AMERICAN SPORTS STORY...THE RIVALS, the new truth-trumps-fiction documentary making its premiere on The Smithsonian Channel, I couldn’t get Napoleon Dynamite’s forlorn Uncle Rico out of my head. It was nearly impossible for me not to superimpose Uncle Rico’s unabashed pining for his lost glory days onto some of the high school football stars of THE RIVALS. Their future would be his. No matter how hard I tried, I kept hearing Uncle Rico lament, “Ohhhh, man I wish I could go back in time. I'd take state.”

That doesn’t mean AN AMERICAN SPORTS STORY... THE RIVALS is a bad or goofy movie. In fact that’s where any similarities end. And if you haven’t seen NAPOLEON DYNAMITE,  “Gosh!!!!!”

Take the HIGH LANE On Demand

IFC Films

On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand and from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: HIGH LANE, premiering today and simultaneously at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX.
Email Sky

What begins as a surprisingly intense physiological analysis of translating real fear on screen, divulges into little more than your typical cannibalistic forest dweller attacking innocent young hikers in HIGH LANE. This French thriller directed by Abel Ferry, centers around a group of extreme mountain climbers who find themselves trapped on a forlorn peak- where the only way off appears to be death.

For those readers fearful of heights, stay away from the first 30 minutes of the film as the high octane climbing scenes, filmed with extreme clarity (climaxing as the repel lines break), provoke even the most iron of stomachs into a fit of nausea. Complete with incoherent flashbacks of a deranged hospital stay that is never fully explained, the beginning of the movie succeeds by instilling real fear in viewers.

PRIMAL On Demand

On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand and from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: PRIMAL, one of four films premiering today and simultaneously at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX.

The Australian wilderness provides an expansive backdrop for this gory but simplistic horror film. In PRIMAL, a group of young men and women embark on a camping expedition in search of ancient Aborginal paintings. Although these cave etchings are rumored to possess supernatural powers, the group fearlessly approaches the site to take pictures.

When one of their crew suddenly falls ill, it is quickly apparent that she is not just suffering from any ordinary virus. As the attractive blonde morphs into a pointy-toothed cannibal with no cognizance of her formal self, she begins savagely attacking her friends. While the campers debate whether or not to kill their possessed friend, she goes on a tyrannical rampage, mauling every creature of the Outback in sight.

On Demand Weekly's VOD Spotlight highlights stories in the On Demand industry. Adam Schartoff interviews actor Manish Dayal from the exciting new series"Rubicon" on AMC. Adam spoke to Manish about getting started, the impact of Video On Demand (VOD) on TV and "Rubicon."

On Demand Weekly: Is “Rubicon” your first series?
Manish Dayal: In a recurring role, yes.

ODW: How many episodes have you appeared in?
MD: I have been in 3.

ODW: Will you be in further episodes?
MD: Yes. I’m in Season 2. PI hope that we get picked up. I think we will. I think we have a good shot. The show’s been doing really well. I haven’t seen anything recently but the last few episodes have been real exciting. It’s the first time I’ve been in a tv show where I can’t wait until the next week.

ODW: It’s a fun show. The writing is really good. It’s taught. Does it follow or preceded "Mad Men"?

MD: It precedes "Mad Men."

ODW: So, they’re riding your coat tails, I guess you could say.
MD: That’s right. We’re their lead in.

All You Need Is Klaus - On Demand

Smithsonian Channel

On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: "All You Need Is Klaus.”
Email Cynthia Kane

“All You Need Is Klaus” airs on Smithsonian Channel as part of the August series Inside the Music, profiling music and musicians who’ve made great impact on our society and the world.

If you don’t know Klaus Voormann, you are wrong. You just think you don’t know Klaus. Well, you may not know the name, but you do know the music.

Klaus Voormann was on of the most in-demand bass players from the mid-60’s till the ‘80’s. Everyone wanted him. The Beatles, Manfred Mann, Harry Nilsson, the Plastic Ono Band, Carly Simon, Cat Stevens, the BeeGees, the list goes on endlessly. A funky, inventive musician.

To make a hit record, all you needed was Klaus.

The Fence (La Barda) - On Demand

HBO

On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: “The Fence.”
Email Jean

In 2006, in the frenzied fear of Homeland Security, Drugs, and Illegal Immigration, Congress decided that what this country needed was a fence. A great big, expensive fence to protect us from the terrorists, drug dealers and illegal immigrants coming from Mexico. And so it was. Sort of. Rory Kennedy’s incisive documentary explains the foibles and follies of our protective boundary with Mexico. (Note that no one has suggested one with Canada).

Back in 1999, I saw Ms. Kennedy’s first documentary, “American Hollow,” and although heartfelt and sincere, it certainly lacked polish. Well, no longer. “The Fence” is not only entertaining and educational; it is also a highly polished and concise piece of documentary filmmaking. At a brisk 36 minutes, “The Fence” cleverly informs the viewer without undue polemicizing.

Horror clichés were turned on their ear in Eli Craig’s debut film. Stars Taylor Labine and Alan Tudyk were a joy as the harmless hillbillies mistaken for psychos.

VOD Spotlight On Parker Posey For THE LOVE GUIDE

Phase 4 Films

On Demand Weekly's Editor-in-Chief, Britt Bensen spoke with actress Parker Posey about her new movie, THE LOVE GUIDE  (Phase 4 films), now on demand.

On Demand Weekly (ODW): You’ve had so many iconic independent film roles (PARTY GIRL, HOUSE OF YES, BASQUIAT, WAITING FOR GUFFMAN). What are your feelings on being so closely associated with independent film?
Parker Posey (PP):
Independent film blossomed in the 90’s writers and directors were able to get financing to fund their vision. That was really exciting. I loved it. It wasn’t the star system. That changed in the ought’s.

There was a collection of artists and writers who could share their stories. There was a human element. Everyone worked with everyone else. They could be a part of something. It all changed. It became more of a business about making money. I think there will be a resurgence to grassroots (filmmaking).

THE LOVE GUIDE is almost like an experiment. Christy Scott Cashman wrote and financed it. I read it and thought ‘This could be fun.’

ODW: You play Angelica Lovecraft, the vegan, personal growth guru of THE LOVE GUIDE. How did you prepare for the role? Do you practice yoga and or meditation yourself?
PP:
I really like women who do yoga. This character takes it a little too far. She thinks she can disappear. She’s striving to do a handstand using no hands (laughs). She thinks she’s a time-traveler. There’s something fun playing a character like that.

I am part of the yoga community here in New York. It’s a growing community of special people. I love and adore anyone who goes searching for a peace of mind, who might drop out of mainstream to follow a counter-culture.

ODW: Tell us about shooting a movie about the fictional show “Cut the Crap”?
PP
: We had a lot of fun shooting. We shot it outside of Boston. It comes from a good place.

ODW: There is a lot about chicken farming in the movie. What did you learn about chickens?
PP:
I got to hold a lot of chickens. There are so many different breeds. They’re sweet.

ODW: I have to ask, what comes first, the chicken or the egg?
