In the current age of flourishing internet porn, it is difficult to imagine an era when Americans could be shocked by anything. We are saturated daily with sensual images and innuendo but in reality, the sexual revolution was not that long ago. The desensitizing of America arguably began with just one film – the legendary DEEP THROAT.

Not only was it one of the first erotic films with plot development and cinematic elements, but its comedic script broadened the appeal of a previously forbidden movie genre. LOVELACE, a new film directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, captures the tortured life of DEEP THROAT’s iconic star, Linda Boreman as she rose to fame with the success of one of the highest grossing adult films of all time.

Any film about the rise (and inevitable fall) of a small town girl who escapes to a big city usually contains elements of drug abuse, violence, sexual abuse and more. LOVELACE, based on Boreman’s own memoirs, has all of this but the directors present a very unique twist on an over told story. The first half of the film depicts a shy but playfully rebellious teen Linda (Amanda Seyfried) as she falls in love with strip club owner Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard).

The couple encounters money troubles in their initial months of marriage and Traynor is able to convince his young bride that porn is their best bet at a solid income. After multiple rounds of practice at home, he plays a demo tape of her performing the infamous act and – voila! – the producers love her! Lovelace is a star! Porn is fun! There are parties! And it’s all so easy! Until its’ not.

Just as the momentum of DEEP THROAT escalates, Epstein and Friedman temporarily halt the narrative, and, instead of moving forward, turn back. Now it’s Boreman’s turn to tell her side of the story. Was she happily whisked away to a better life with Chuck? Or did he threaten her life and attempt marital rape? Did Linda excitedly show up to the set each day, eager to please the cast and crew? Or was she beaten and held at gunpoint before uniting with her coworkers? The truth to this day remains slightly convoluted and the audience can decide which version they prefer.
