VOD Trend Spotter is a new weekly column where Kendra Anderson explores the most watched TV Series On Demand (by looking at Comcast (America's largest cable VOD provider)  xfinity On Demand's weekly rankings). Sometimes the trends are obvious; other times, she adds her own spin to the psyche of the time-shifting audience.

·         NBC’s (NBC TV) “The Office” (Official Show Website) clocks in for both SD and HD (#6 and #3, respectively). This week marked Steve Carell’s (Wikipedia) last episode as Michael Scott (Wikipedia), the show’s bumbling-yet-loveable manager.

o    How can there be an Office without Michael Scott? Will Ferrell (Wikipedia) won’t cut it, and there is tons of speculation (Daily Mail) as to who will be the next Dunder Mifflin (Wikipedia) appointee (Will Arnett, please!) (Wikipedia). To echo Dwight’s words at the end of the show, “Uh oh.” – KA

·         Comcast is the first MSO to offer current TV shows from all 4 Major Broadcast networks On Demand (On Demand Weekly). Beginning last Thursday 4/28, more than 20 popular TV series from ABC and FOX began a roll out On Demand the day after live broadcast. Each of the major broadcast networks will offer the four most recent episodes from select TV series On Demand. (Engadget)

o    In case you’ve been living under a rock (YouTube), this is an important announcement. First, other cable providers are going to need to step it up to match Comcast’s (Official Website) play – who will be next? Also, are we going to see a bump in popularity for shows on Fox (Official Website) and ABC (Official Website), which haven’t yet been available On Demand?. – KA

·         WWE (WWE Official Website) announced a record 1 million PPV buys of annual showcase WrestleMania (Variety), a 30% increase over last year’s numbers. This year’s goal was reached through significant promotion by WWE alumni Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (IMDB) and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin (Wikipedia), in addition to “Jersey Shore’s” Snooki (Official Website).

o    For pro wrestling fans, this actually is big news. Pay-Per-View is the primary option for audiences to see these live shows, and the margins are incredible – events typically run between $35 and $60 (Comcast), to watch live on your home screen. And WrestleMania is kind of like Sweeps (Wikipedia) for the rest of TV, so it’s good to know things are looking up for those among us who like violence. – KA

·         CBS (CBS Official Website) lost some of its footing this week, owning only 40% of the top 10 series On Demand, compared to last week’s 67% (6/9) share. The network fared even worse in HD viewing – last week CBS stole 100% of the top spots, and this week, only 40%.

o    CBS still hasn’t responded to my requests for comment on their insanely successful On Demand presence. I will fool myself and say it’s karma, but we really know this has nothing to do with me, and everything to do with Steve Carell. (The Atlantic) I’ll miss ya, buddy. – KA

·         Welcome to the top 10, AMC. (AMC TV) This week their show “The Killing” (Official Show Website) put away the #8 spot On Demand. It’s the first live action scripted show from a basic cable network that’s made it into the top 10 series On Demand (since this column began).

o    Guess what? “The Killing” is a police procedural. (Wikipedia) You remember how much America likes those, right? So while the show itself appearing in the lineup isn’t big, the fact that AMC gets On Demand props this week is. – KA

MOVIES ON DEMAND

Movies On Demand Premiering This Week (September 13, 2011)

- THOR
- HESHER
- HANNA
- EVERYTHING MUST GO
- RED STATE

It's a Risky week...

THOR – Premieres September 13

Another Marvel character-driven action movie. Like its most recent success in IRON MAN, Paramount decided to have fun and not take itself too seriously (see HULK).

What more can I say? A good popcorn movie before TV returns with all of its Fall series.
Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman.
PG-13, Action
Also in 3D where available.

Same day as DVD

HESHER – Premieres September 13

What, another Natalie Portman film? You got it. Well, you can't say she did THOR and HESHER (which she produced) for the same reasons. And regular fave Joseph Gordon Levitt (500 DAYS OF SUMMER, INCEPTION) seems to have a hair thing going on with his recent roles (HESHER - long hair. Current release 50/50 - no hair).

As a black comedy, independent film, this is a perfect example of a film to Risk watching on demand. You may hate it. But if you don't order it, you won't know if you'll love it because chances are it didn't play in your local theater.
Joseph Gordon Levitt, Natalie Portman, Rainn Wilson
R, Dark Comedy

Same day as DVD

HANNA – Premiered September 6

No surprise Joaquin Phoenix doppleganger (director Joe Wright - ATONEMENT) would deliver a well made film. The surprise is it is about a teenage girl assassin who is truly bad ass. Maybe unbelievably so, but Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett add a stamp of approval.
Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett
PG-13, Action

Same Day as DVD, Weeks before Netflix and Redbox

EVERYTHING MUST GO – Premiered September 2

EVERYTHING MUST GO is not a comedy.
EVERYTHING MUST GO is not a comedy.
EVERYTHING MUST GO is not a comedy.

If you've enjoyed the former SNL funnyman in more serious roles (STRANGER THAN FICTION, WINTER PASSING) then give this a shot. Make it a drink-free evening.
Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall, Michael Pena, Laura Dern
R, Comedy/Drama

Before DVD, before Netflix and Redbox

RED STATE – Premiered September 1

And the award to the most hyped independent film this year, RED STATE. Entertaining speaker and now sometime filmmaker, Kevin Smith wraps a horror movie plot around the beliefs of a fundamental religious organization.

As it did by opening at Sundance Film Festival, Smith has created an opportunity for an event experience than a good movie. Opposition groups picketed the festival premiere and Smith matched their efforts in the parking lot. It provided a lot of press for the film that doesn't live up to the hype.
John Goodman, Melissa Leo, Michael Parks
R, Thriller

Before theatrical release

You’ve Seen Celebrities Pledge To Watch TIM AND ERIC’S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE, Will You?February 22, 2012

You’ve Seen Celebrities Pledge To Watch TIM AND ERIC’S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE, Will You?

Magnolia Pictures

On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews of hot movies on demand from the POV of watching from the comfort of your home. Today’s review: TIM AND ERIC’S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE (Magnolia).

TIM AND ERIC’S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE
By Adam Schartoff

Warning: do not see this movie without smoking cannibis first. If you haven’t heard of Tim and Eric, permit me to illuminate. To call them a comedy duo would not be quite the accurate description. While they do create sketches designed to make people laugh, they generally don’t include the traditional comic arcs you might find in, say, a Saturday Night Live skit or something on Funny or Die. Gross out humor is a basic tenet as are the deranged characters who populate the sketches.

Ostensibly an expanded version of their sketch show on Adult Swim —cleverly called Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job— TIM AND ERIC’S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE follows the titular pair, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, whom after getting an enormous budget to make their movie, wind up and blowing it all on make-overs and other insane purchases. The movie starts with them screening their movie —maybe 10 minutes long— for the top brass at the studio which includes Tommy Shlaaang (Robert Loggia), their chief investor. Displeased with the outcome of the movie, Shlaaang demands his money back or will have the two killed.

In order to raise the billion dollars, the guys respond to a TV add to take over a mall currently operated by businessman Damien Weebs (Will Ferrell) and his son Taquito (John C. Reilly). The mall has become beset with fire and brimstone. There’s are winos sleeping in corridors, and a blood thirsty wolf looking for prey among other things. Not to say its stores aren’t in operation. One is a sword shop run by the least customer friendly human being you’re likely to come across and played by a mustachioed Will Forte. Another shop is run by a man who, in order to keep his job at the mall, agrees to hand his pre-pubescent son over to Tim who subsequently refers to the boy as his own. Fortunately the more creepier possibilities to that sub-plot are never explored.

Lionsgate Sneak Peeks Oscar® Nominated ALBERT NOBBS On DemandApril 19, 2012

Lionsgate Sneak Peeks Oscar® Nominated ALBERT NOBBS On Demand

Lionsgate

Lionsgate Digital Distribution announced the Pre DVD sneak of three-time Academy Awards® nominated ALBERT NOBBS on demand. The film stars Oscar® nominees Glenn Close and Janet McTeer. The sneak peek is available now, a month ahead of the film’s debut on Blu-ray Disc, DVD and Digital Download on May 15th.

On Demand Weekly discussed this VOD strategy for ALBERT NOBBS and past Lionsgate films (including RED STATE, EVERYTHING MUST GO and MARGIN CALL) with Thomas Hughes, SVP, Worldwide Digital Worldwide Television & Digital Distribution.

On Demand Weekly (ODW): Why did Lionsgate sneak peek ALBERT NOBBS on demand?

Thomas Hughes (TH): ALBERT NOBBS is a great movie that in limited release theatrically (in just 75 markets) got notoriety from award nominations. This got the attention of our cable / satellite partners. Because of the early window, our partners are willing to promote it in unique ways and give it premium placement.

Thomas Hughes, SVP, Worldwide Digital Worldwide Television & Digital Distribution

ODW: Has Lionsgate sneaked movies on demand before?
TH:
We did with ABDUCTION with Taylor Lautner early on December 22, 2011, before the holidays, in a limited release window until January 4, 2012. The DVD did not come out until January 17, 2012.

ABDUCTION (courtesy of Lionsgate)

It was a huge success. We saw an incremental lift over a similar genre movie.

Movies Lionsgate has sneaked before a particular window
:

RED STATE: Kevin Smith (Pre Theatrical)
MARGIN CALL: Kevin Spacey, Zacahary Quinto (Day & Date)
EVERYTHING MUST GO: Will Ferrell (Pre DVD)
TRESPASS: Nicholas Cage, Nicole Kidman (Day & Date)
ABDUCTION: Taylor Lautner (Pre DVD)
ALBERT NOBBS: Glenn Close (Pre DVD)

MARGIN CALL (courtesy of Lionsgate)

ODW: How does Lionsgate decide what movies will do well on demand?
TH:
It's a little bit of the Wild Wild West. We are willing to experiment. Lionsgate's entrepreneurial spirit allows us to experiment where others may not be able to.

ODW: Does Lionsgate make extras and behind the scenes available on demand as they do on DVD?
TH:
In some cases we do. It's not always ready when we go out early and if the platform can take. Not every platform can. The digital partners seem to be well positioned. Everybody is familiar with iTunes extras.

I think you are going to see a movement

where everybody will want to be positioned to offer extras.

ODW: When is the release strategy of a movie determined, before or after production?
