Let Them Chirp Awhile: On Demand

On Demand Weekly provides new movie reviews to hot movies on demand. This week, "Let Them Chirp Awhile" from FilmBuff on Time Warner Movies On Demand and Comcast TV.
New to the FilmBuff (a division of Cinetic Media) VOD channel programming (that has included such diverse indie titles as docu "The Carter," about Lil Wayne, Richard Linklater's "Slacker" and Rob Epstein's "The Times of Harvey Milk") comes "Let Them Chirp Awhile," the 2007 debut feature from (then) 23 year-old Jonathan Blitstein. "Chirp" is a 90-minute low-budget film shot with donated film stock and a 'family, friends and Mastercard' approach to post-NYU filmmaking.
The film centers around two work-challenged, late twenties daydreamers: Bobby (Justin Rice) and Scott (Brendan Sexton III). Bobby can't write a page but he has grand ideas. Scott listens to music but struggles to write his own. Along the way, Bobby loses a dog he was dogsitting and has to find a replacement. Scott leaks Bobby's idea to a hack playwright and it is used in a showcase. Scott breaks up with his girlfriend Michelle (Laura Breckenridge) and Bobby shares a romantic moment with her, ruining the chances of his own budding relationship with another woman. They have problems but one gets the feeling Bobby and Scott will be friends forever.

Kate’s Top Movies On Demand For The Babes

By Kate Asche Wilson
Happy New Year ladies! Hopefully your holiday was filled with glitter and joy and not agonizing depression and box wine. It’s a new year! Anything can happen! You might win the lottery and a steamy trip to Barbados. You might discover the most mouth watering delicious cupcake you’ve ever eaten, and it’s only five calories. You might run away with Sven the gorgeous Ski instructor from Sweden. And if none of that happens, well, you’ll always have Movies on Demand. Trust me Sven might seem good on paper but his accent is impossible to understand, and he has a raging case of Herpes.
Top On Demand Films For The Babes:
HIT AND RUN- Premiers January 8
With the dream team of real life couple Dax Shepard and Kristin Bell how could this awkward comedy not be good? The film is written and directed by Shepard who also stars as the protagonist Charlie Bronson, a former getaway driver that is now in the witness protection program. Bell plays his girlfriend who has the opportunity to live her dream in Los Angeles but needs Shepard to drive her there. Putting himself in jeopardy Bronson embarks on this ill-advised road trip, but finds himself in all sorts of hilarious situations including a slew of chase scenes fueled by a wayward Bradley Cooper. Honestly I wish I was watching this right now.
R, Comedy, Kristen Bell, Dax Shepard, Same day as DVD, weeks before Netflix & Redbox
I realize that most films that are catered towards women are terrible rom coms that have loose plots and star Jake Gyllenhaal. I mean don’t get me wrong I would watch basically anything that had Jake Gyllenhaal in it, but sometimes I just want something a little different. Like a terrifying mother daughter horror film that just screams we will never sleep comfortably again. Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Elisabeth Shue this film centers on Elissa and Sarah who thought they found the perfect house at the end of the street, but discover it has more secrets than their realtor let on. Hey it had a nook! How were they supposed to know it was infested with a murderous spirit?
PG-13, Thriller, Jennifer Lawrence, Elisabeth Shue, Same day as DVD, weeks before Netflix

TO ROME WITH LOVE- Premiers January 15
I love everything Woody Allen does so be prepared that if a Woody Allen movie comes out it will be on this list. And for good reason too because the man is brilliant. With an ensemble cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, and Woody Allen himself, TO ROME WITH LOVE brings us to the beautiful city of Rome where four separate vignette stories are told. It’s a Woody Allen film so you have to prepare for some magical realism and a lot of neurosis, but trust me it’s definitely worth it.
R, Comedy, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Same day as DVD

A Film For The Guys That The Babes Will Like:

SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS- Premiers January 29
I’m certain this is one of the most underrated films of this year and insist that you watch it. Watch it with your guy, watch it with your friends, watch it with yourself. Just watch it because if you like absurd and incredible comedy you cannot miss out on this. I’m not even going to tell you the plot because I don’t want you to make any false assumptions. Just go watch it. Now. I will tell you though that Christopher Walken is in it. And we all know that everyone loves Christopher Walken.
PG, Family, voices: Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, Charlie Tahan, Same day as DVD, available in 3D

Babes And Guys:

FRANKENWEENIE- Premiers January 8
Tim Burton is filled with wacky weird whimsy and the worlds he can create are just like him. FRANKENWEENIE is no exception, and pays a beautiful homage to the classic black and white horror films with its story. Following a tragic accident where our hero Victor’s pet dog Sparky is hit by a car, Victor decides to bring him back to life. Because of the mayhem and destruction the “new” Sparky has caused, Victor must now convince his town that despite his appearance Sparky is the same loyal dog they knew before. This animated film is smart and entertaining, and will be extremely enjoyable for both babes and guys.
PG, Family, voices: Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, Charlie Tahan, Same day as DVD, available in 3D

January Movies On Demand

OnDemandWeekly.com Movie on Demand Preview for January 2014 from Nick DeNinno on Vimeo.

Happy New Year friends! It is officially 2014 so go ahead and wipe the trauma of 2013 out of your minds. It’s a new year. You can do anything. You can be anyone. I myself am planning on being Morgan Freeman. There’s a word of possibilities at your fingertips so go ahead buy that boat. Invest in those unpredictable stocks. You might make millions or you might lose all of your money and have to live in a cardboard box. Either way you’re on the road to a new you! And once you’re done finding yourself check out my top three January movies on demand.

Heartbreak, alcoholism, getting into college: All the ingredients necessary to make the perfect coming of age film. THE SPECTACULAR NOW is a brilliant dramedy that follows It’s hedonistic lead, Sutter, through the revelry of youth as he deals with an absentee father, corrupting the nice girl, and priding himself on living in the now. He is equal parts charming and full of shit, and the greatest thing about him is that you know him. It’s that person in your life that suffers from the fear of missing out. The one that can’t get their head out of their ass long enough to see what’s in front of them. Sutter’s story is an incredible journey of growth and THE SPECTACULAR NOW captures that perfectly.
R, Drama/Romance, Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Brie Larson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kyle Chandler

BLUE JASMINE - Premiers January 21
Woody Allen what have you done? You wrote a new age Streetcar Named Desire in San Francisco. You effortlessly chronicled the psychotic break of a former New York socialite like it was nothing. Seriously? Are you trying to kill me with your unbelievable dialogue and your unhinged characters and your wildly appealing plots? Just stop with your amazing writing because I don’t think the world can handle it anymore. And take Cate Blanchet and her perfect performance with you because if she doesn’t win the Academy Award for her portrayal of Jasmine I’m going to lose my mind. Seriously it will be Leo circa 2005 all over again.
PG-13, Drama, Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Alec Baldwin, Bobby Cannavale, Andrew Dice Clay, Michael Stuhlbarg, Louis C.K., Peter Sarsgaard

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS - Premiers January 21
What screams family fun more than a hostage drama starring Tom Hanks? Nothing! You are correct. Especially since this critically acclaimed film is an action packed look at the true story of the 2009 hijacking of an American Cargo ship by Somali pirates; The first hijacking in two hundred years. This thriller stars an excellent Tom Hanks as Captain Richard Phillips as he takes on the leader of the Somali pirates in an epic power play that will have you reaching for your inhaler. Hanks is already leading the awards season by being nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance and the film itself is nominated for best picture. Do not miss out on this one.
PG-13, Action/Drama, Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Catherine Keener

Well that’s January team. Best of luck trying to keep those New Years resolutions and remember go to OnDemandWeekly.com for all new Movies On Demand this month.
